Beneath The Remains is the album that really introduced Sepultura to the world, since they signed at the time with the record label Roadracer, which would later change its name to the more well-known Roadrunner Records, due to the contact that Max established with executive producer Monte Conner (well, the sound made on the 1987 Schizophrenia album was responsible and facilitated all that). Beneath The Remains was recorded at Das Nuvens studio during night sessions (except for Max's vocals that were recorded at Morrisound in Florida), one of the most famous studios in Brazil and this work was produced/mixed by Scott Burns, unknown until then, although his name was already linked to Death, Obituary and sometime later to Terrorizer and Napalm Death. Originally composed of nine tracks (when this album was re-released and remastered, three bonus tracks were included), Beneath The Remains is a destructive, furious, heavy and noisy album (this is due to the constant noise of drum plates/cymbals on the recording and it was not possible to correct this error in the remastering in 1997) and songs like "Beneath The Remains" ("Who has won? Who has died? Beneath the remains"), "Inner Self" ("Walking ithese dirty streets. With hate in my mind [...] Nonconformity in my inner self. Only I guide my inner self " - Sepultura's first video clip and the title of the song came from Kelly Schaefer of Atheist), "Stronger Than Hate" (backing vocals by John Tardy of Obituary and Kelly Schaefer of Atheist - important note: Paulo recorded the bass solo at the end of this track and this was his moment, in terms of recording this album), "Mass Hypnosis" ("Hate through the arteries. Mass hypnosis Soldiers going nowhere. Soldiers blinded by their faith"), "Slaves of Pain" ("Life ends. Feeling death. Slaves of pain") and "Primitive Future" (a tip for those who like to read: the American philosopher and anarcoprimitivist John Zerzan released a book called Future Primitive in 1994, it is worth reading) are the highlights of this album, because it will always be remembered by those passionate about Sepultura. Another highlight is the lyrics of Beneath The Remains, because are really good, well built and I made sure to put some excerpts in the previous sentence as you could see. Obviously, the beautiful and striking skull on the cover draws a lot of attention and you automatically associate this image with Sepultura (beginners, make no mistake, Full of Hell just copied this art and changed the names) was a work done by Michael Whelan and was also used by writer George R. R. Martin (now known worldwide for the television series called Game of Thrones) in his book called Sandkings, but the curious story surrounding the art of Beneath The Remains is related to Obituary, more precisely the cover of Cause of Death, because the Brazilians liked it, but the Americans had already chosen the art first (in fact, the orange skull with the black background used by Sepultura was much better and perfectly matched with the lyrical concept/theme of Beneath The Remains). After the release of Beneath The Remains in 1989, the Sepultura guys embarked on their first European tour together with Sodom and the Brazilians blew everyone away, making the audience go crazy with their heavy sound, which awoke the anger and the jealousy of the Sodom manager at the time, known as mister Cleanliness or mister Clean. As revenge for Mr. Clean's sabotage acts, Max went on the whole tour without taking a shower, completely stinking. Anyway, I have a special affection for Beneath The Remains, because it was the first band shirt I had in my life (when you are young, wearing a shirt like this gives you a feeling of real power - unfortunately only my brother has photos with this shirt) and this album is one of the best records of Sepultura's career and of the thrash metal scene as a whole, it has influenced generations around the world, from all types of metal music, through hardcore/punk and crust. Beneath The Remains é o álbum que apresentou de fato o Sepultura para o mundo, já que eles assinaram na época com a gravadora Roadracer, que mais tarde mudaria o nome para a mais conhecida Roadrunner Records, e isso se deve ao contato que Max estabeleceu com o produtor executivo Monte Conner (bem, o som apresentado em Schizophrenia de 1987 foi o responsável e facilitou tudo isso e tal). Outro destaque são as letras de Beneath The Remains, pois são realmente muito boas, bem construídas e que fiz questão de colocar alguns trechos na frase anterior como você pôde perceber. Obviamente, a bela e impactante caveira na capa chama muita atenção e automaticamente você associa essa imagem ao Sepultura (iniciantes, não se enganem, a Full of Hell apenas copiou essa arte e trocou os nomes) foi um trabalho feito por Michael Whelan e que também foi usada pelo escritor George R. R. Martin (hoje mundialmente conhecido por causa da série televisiva chamada Game of Thrones) em seu livro chamado Sandkings, mas a história curiosa envolvendo a arte de Beneath The Remains está relacionada ao Obituary, mais precisamente a capa de Cause of Death, pois os brasileiros gostaram dela, porém os americanos já tinham escolhido a arte primeiro (de fato, a caveira laranjada com o fundo preto usado pelo Sepultura ficou muito melhor e combinou perfeitamente com o conceito/tema lírico de Beneath The Remains). Depois do lançamento de Beneath The Remains em 1989, os caras do Sepultura embarcaram para a sua primeira turnê europeia juntamente com o Sodom e os brasileiros detonaram tudo mesmo, deixando o público enlouquecido com o som pesado feito por eles, o que despertou a irá e o ciúmes do empresário do Sodom na época, conhecido como senhor Limpeza. Em vingança aos atos de sabotagem do senhor Limpeza, Max ficou toda a turnê sem tomar banho, ou seja, completamente fedorento. Enfim, eu tenho um carinho especial por Beneath The Remains, pois foi a primeira camisa de banda que eu tive na minha vida (quando você é novo, usar uma camisa como esta te da uma sensação de poder real - infelizmente só o meu irmão tem fotos com essa camisa) e este álbum é um dos melhores registros da carreira do Sepultura e da cena thrash metal como um todo, na qual vem influenciando gerações em todo o mundo, desde de todas as vertentes do metal, passando pelo hardcore/punk e crust.
