With the departure of Max Cavalera, Sepultura faced their biggest problem of their career, the guys even thought of changing their name, they had to decide whether to continue the journey as a trio or seek a new singer. In fact, Sepultura began writing the new material as a trio with Andreas Kisser taking over the vocals, but the guys felt the need for a new vocalist, since Andreas did not feel comfortable in this position. Many demo tapes with vocals came in the Roadrunner office and the Sepultura guys selected the best. In this way, the selected candidates received a tape with the music, and they were free to work on it and even write the lyrics. The song in question was "Choke" and many well-known metal figures made their versions like Marc Grewe (Morgoth, Insidious Disease and Despair), Phil Demmel (Machine Head and Vio-lence), Chuck Billy (Testament) and even Supla (Brazilian singer of post-punk band Tokyo and well-known in the hardcore scene of New York). But the guy chosen was an American Derrick "Predator" Green, from the hardcore scene in Cleveland. The guys even did some secret shows in small clubs in the USA under the name of Troops of Doom, but soon everyone present realized that this was the new Sepultura. Thus, Sepultura released their first album with Derrick in 1998, marking the beginning of a new era for the band. In October of this year 2018, "Against" will mark the 20th anniversary of its release and I say that this album is one of the most important of Sepultura's career, since the band started again from scratch, since they lost their manager, producers and the vocalist. "Against" is a very aggressive, heavy and powerful album, highlighting the great influence of hardcore and this record follows a different path chosen by Max and Soulfly who made a "Roots" part 2. Obviously, "Against" has the experimental moments like in the tracks "F.O.E." (Freedom of Expression - cover of James L. Bowen and also is the theme song of the Brazilian TV program called Globo Repórter), "Kamaitachi" (recorded in Japan with the percussive group Kodō - taiko group) and "T3RCERMillennium" (acoustic and accompanied by a cello). However, the best parts of "Against" are when Sepultura plays thrash metal/hardcore and tracks such as "Against" (total hardcore), "Choke", "Rumors" (very strong bass and killer drums), "Floaters in Mud", "Tribus", "Reza" (hardcore mayhem with João Gordo from Ratos de Porão on vocals - because of that song, Max Cavalera ended his friendship of many years with Gordo, because Max thought the lyrics were made for him) "Unconscious", "Drowned Out" and "Hatred Aside"(total Motörhead and with Jason Newsted [ex-Metallica] on vocals) are my favorite songs. The Brazilian version of "Against" contains two bonus tracks: "Gene Machine/Don't Bother Me" (Bad Brains cover) and "Prenúncio" (monologue written and recited in Portuguese by Coffin Joe about fear, corruption, unknown forces, freedom of expression and other taboos). About the cover that is quite strong and shocking to Western standards (for Christians this would be two demons), the Japanese influence is present again, with the two Hannya mask and Mitsu-Tomoe. To close, I listened a lot to "Against" and I think it is a fucking great record, the best album with Derrick Green on vocals.
